Selkie costume update!

2025-12-20

Progress has been slow but progress has been made! With the cold days and not being able to access my sewing machine very often, I haven't been able to progress as much as I'd like. But I still did a few things and actually finished the seal head!

Last time I shared a picture of the complete furball that was the head. I did a lot of shaving, lots of fur in my nose and in my mouth, but it actually looked like something finally!

I then painted the nose around the nostrils, and added some black around the eye holes and the whiskers to add more details

I'm not sure I'll add spots, I feel like it's gonna ruin the look, especially if I have to do some on all of the coat.

The eyes are plastic balls you can decorate to make Christmas decorations and such. I painted the inside a dark blue.

The whiskers are heavy fishing wire (0,7mm width I believe). I cut it into 30 cm strands and melted one hand so it stays inside the foam. I found that in a tutorial and it worked well! I added more glue inside for good measure and it has stuck so far. It was a pain to add though.

So that's the end result! I've started working on the rest of the coat, sewn the flippes, but I failed miserably when trying to add the backing. I'll try a second time and if it still doesn't work, I think I'll just glue the edges so they don't fray and won't add backing.
